“Gardens are increasingly common features of Canadian schoolyards. But Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society is taking the idea to the next level: bringing their produce to market.
Over the last two years, Fresh Roots has partnered with the Vancouver School Board and Vancity to build productive farms on school grounds. Fresh Roots sells the Vancouver School Board produce for use in school cafeterias and works with teachers to use their farms for hands-on learning and curriculum integration. This summer, they’ve opened a market stand at their Vancouver Technical Secondary School (Van Tech) location, selling their produce to the public — a program that is the first of its kind.”
