CANCELLED – Fresh Roots Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner

We are sad to announce we have cancelled our beloved Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner for this summer. Thank you for being part of our community and to many of you for reaching out, purchasing tickets, and spreading the word about the event.

Unfortunately, many factors and forces contributed to higher event costs and low ticket sales and we just were not able to sell a minimum number to give us confidence that we could raise funds through the event.

We have gained valuable insights from this experience, and we are excited to get creative with our amazing supporters and partners to explore new possibilities for delicious and celebratory fundraising events in the future!

Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society hosts Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner, July 6

Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society hosts Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner, July 6

The outdoor culinary experience benefits the organization’s youth programs

Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society

BACK AFTER A three-year pandemic pause, Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society is hosting its Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner on July 6 from 5:30 to 9:30 pm—hopefully. Slower than usual ticket sales to date mean the typically sold-out-in-advance fete might not proceed. The event raises funds for youth programs that empower young people to connect with their community and the food on their plate, learning about nature’s bounty and culinary approaches to it.

Taking place at David Thompson Secondary School, the multicourse sit-down meal is made with ingredients from schoolyard farms and community partners, paired with wine, beer, other beverages (by the likes of Ward’s Cider, Persephone Brewing Company, and Edna’s Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Company). There’s live music, too.

Participating culinary artists include Governor General Award-winning chef Robert Clark and Julian Bond (of Organic Ocean Seafood), Chef TJ Conwi (Ono Vancouver), Fumiko Moreton (Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre), and Derrick Sibayan (Holts Café). It kicks off with a cocktail reception with a grazing table, during which time people can tour the schoolyard farm.

You know those saying about how truly great people don’t put themselves first, but instead think of others/ We don’t either, which doesn’t mean there’s not at least a kernel of truth to that.

Harvest Dinner needs saviours

Think of it as a chance to not only enjoy hyper-local dining in the great (urban) outdoors, but also to make an instant difference in the lives of kids.

Pre-pandemic, the Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner was one of the calendar year’s hot tickets, selling out almost instantly. Run by the Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, the event traditionally starts with a cocktail hour and then includes a multi-course dinner. This year, July 6, meals will be prepared by chefs including Organic Ocean Seafood’s Julian Bond, Ono Vancouver’s TJ Conwi, and Governor General’s Award winner Robert Clark.

The longtable dinner takes place at David Thompson Secondary School, with ingredients from Fresh Roots’ schoolyard food program and community partners. (For those unclear what Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society is, the mandate is to empower young folk to connect with both community and the food they eat. The gardens here are at David Thompson.) Dinner is $250 per ticket for adults, includes a tour of the onsite gardens as well as live music.

Where do you come in for all of this? The Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner is hoping to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. But the event has been MIA for the past three years due to the pandemic. Being out of the public eye isn’t always the best thing, and 2023 ticket sales need to pick up for things to go ahead as planned. So, if you want to do something good this weekend…..

This Awesome Vancouver Long-Table Dinner Is in Danger of Being Cancelled

This Awesome Vancouver Long-Table Dinner Is in Danger of Being Cancelled

The annual Fresh Roots Schoolyard Harvest Dinner is July 6—get tickets now or miss your chance.

Vancouver nonprofit Fresh Roots announced yesterday that its annual Schoolyard Harvest Dinner (on July 6, 2023) may have to be cancelled—so if you’ve been putting off getting tickets, now is the time to show your support.

Usually, the event is quick to sell out, but this year tickets have been moving a little slower. That sucks for all the people who have been working hard to put the event together, but it sucks more for the organization as a whole: Fresh Roots relies heavily on the proceeds from this dinner to fund its programming, which focuses on educating urban youth on farming, food security and environmentalism. Through these programs, kids and teens learn how to plant, care for and harvest food, and also sell the fruits (and vegetables) of their labour at local farmers’ markets.

At risk of sounding like a grumpy boomer: it’s a super-positive, educational way to get off that damn phone.

Reasons to Get Tickets to the Schoolyard Harvest Dinner

(If you’re already convinced, get tickets here.)

1. It’s hosted by some of Vancouver’s most talented chefs

Fresh Roots always has a great roster of local talent serving up the long-table dinner. This year, the lineup includes chef Robert Clark and chef Julian Bond of Organic Ocean Seafood, chef TJ Conwi of Ono Vancouver, pastry chef Fumiko Moreton of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre and chef Derrick Sibayan of Holts Café. The menu’s not set yet, but it’s likely going to be as awesome as last year’s.

2. It benefits a great cause

As mentioned above, Fresh Roots is a nonprofit that benefits Vancouver’s youth—it’s hard to think of a better way to spend your money. The programs are super robust: take a look through all the camps, classes, events and education they offer here.

3. There’s a grazing table, live music and cocktails

The Schoolyard Harvest dinner takes place from 5:30 to 9:30, so it’s not just the classic sit-down long-table experience. Live music, a cocktail hour and a grazing table start off the evening (a rule of life: don’t fill up on bread).

4. It’s super Instagrammable

Okay, maybe getting away from technology is one of the great things about this farm-focused nonprofit—but this dinner is also a great opportunity to take some beautiful photos.

5. It’s for the kids

This one felt important enough to include twice.

6. We have a discount code for 15 percent off

Oh, did we forget to mention that Vanmag readers have access to a discount code for the event? Tickets are $250 plus tax (it’s not cheap, but it is a fundraiser: that’s where the funds come in). The code VANMAG15 will save you almost 40 bucks. You’re welcome.

Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society’s youth programs

Vancouver B.C., June 21, 2023—After a 3-year hiatus, Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society is excited to be bringing back their most anticipated and critical fundraiser of the year: Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner on Thursday, July 6, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. However, this previously quick-to-sell-out summertime event is already at risk of being cancelled due to slow ticket sales. Fresh Roots relies heavily on this event to fund Fresh Roots’ youth programs which empower young people to connect with both their community and the food on their plate. Celebrating nature’s bounty on the verdant farm grounds of David Thompson Secondary School, Schoolyard Harvest Longtable Dinner is an elegant, chef-prepared multi-course, seated dinner made with locally sourced ingredients from the charity’s schoolyard farms and community partners, and paired with an open bar of wine, beer, and other beverages. Tickets are $250 for adults, and include food, drink, live music and farm tours!

“This year’s event is a special celebration of the 10th anniversary of Fresh Roots’ first schoolyard farm,” explains Alexa Pitoulis, Fresh Roots Executive Director. “It will be an unforgettable culinary evening on the oasis of our urban farm—all in support of farm-based learning and leadership for kids and youth across Metro Vancouver.”

The evening will begin with cocktail hour at 5:30pm. Guests will choose between craft alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages accompanied by a grazing table composed of locally produced ingredients and the best of the season’s local harvest. During cocktail hour, guests are encouraged to mingle and wander through the lush schoolyard farm to experience the work of Fresh Roots firsthand at the peak of golden hour. Knowledgeable staff and former youth participants will be eager to offer farm tours and tell guests about their personal experiences with Fresh Roots.

At 6:30pm diners will take their seats to indulge in a locally-focused multi-course meal prepared by Governor General’s Award-winning Chef Robert Clark, and Chef Julian Bond (Organic Ocean Seafood), Chef TJ Conwi (Ono Vancouver), acclaimed Pastry Chef Fumiko Moreton (Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre), and Chef Derrick Sibayan (Holts Café), plus beverages from Ward’s Cider, Persephone Brewing Company, and Edna’s Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Company.

All funds raised at the Schoolyard Farm Longtable Dinner benefit Fresh Roots’ youth programs. Over the past decade, Fresh Roots has embarked on an inspiring and transformative journey, empowering young people to become food citizens and land stewards. Participants learn how to grow and sell food through planting, harvesting, and working at farmer’s markets. They develop valuable farming and entrepreneurial experience while also nurturing their self-confidence and ability to work effectively as a team.
