Fresh Roots stewards two bountiful Schoolyard Market Gardens at David Thompson Secondary School and Vancouver Technical Secondary School (VanTech). These gardens are outdoor, hands-on learning classrooms. Together, children, students, teachers and neighbours explore sustainable food production, cooking, and healthy eating through various activities and programing in the garden.
Field Trips to the Market Gardens
Are you looking for a fun and educational experience outdoors in an inspiring garden? Our programs cater to multi-aged groups with a diversity of backgrounds.
Elementary
Bring your class to discover what’s growing in the schoolyard market garden! Our field trip programs encourage experiential learning by offering hands-on activities that aim to improve students’ connection to the whole food system.
Secondary
Bring your high school students to the garden to learn about the food production cycle, ecology and sustainability.
Other Groups
(day cares, summer camps, neighbourhood houses, after-school care programs, community centers, scouts, pre-schools )
“Just wanted to say thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to visit and learn about your amazing farm and adventures! You guys seriously inspired everyone (including me) to grow better and connect our own gardens to our community. The conversations I had with the seniors after were all so amazing, and they were so interested in starting their own productive gardens and making CNH [Renfrew – Collingwood Neighbourhood House] a better place!
The work you guys do is amazing, and I’m so happy to have such amazing people in my life and community!”
Mulch love,
Brendan Chan, Intergenerational Outreach Worker, 2013
Schoolyard Farm Tours
We offer schoolyard farm tours where groups learn more about the history, mission and activities of these schoolyard market gardens, and how they play a critical role in establishing a resilient urban food system.
Are you a university class, youth worker, neighbourhood house programmer, or leader in a Vancouver company interested in inspiring your team, your class or your staff, by engaging them in local food, community driven innovation, and sustainable, whole food systems?
