What do you say to a rain cloud that stays when the beach is filled with sun?
Do you just disband in this rainforest land; say forget it, I’m on the run.
Do you wait till it’s right; and under the dark night drop buckets on top of the roof
Either way, we’re glad that by day; this weather is clearly rain proof.

Howdy Everyone,

Transplants are growing, seeds are sprouting, and students are gardening! The warmer weather means even more action in the schoolyard market gardens.

It’s spring time, and that means we are ready to recruit you to help grow school yard market gardens. We are officially recruiting volunteers! Check it out if you want to get your hands dirty and work in the fields. And don’t forget to visit us during our Good Food Market Tuesday, May 6 from 3 to 5 pm, at David Thompson Secondary School.

Fresh Roots is hosting the Think&EatGreen@School 2014 Summer Institute at the David Thompson schoolyard market garden in July. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to learn on food systems, gardening, cooking and so much more!

With a fistful of sunshine,

Ilana, Marc, Marilou and Scott

Farmer’s Log

Spring showers bring May flowers – and delicious vegetables! We’ve had a great mix of rain and sun over the past few weeks, making life a little easier for our seedlings as they sprout or transition from our greenhouse to the field. We’ve been busy transplanting head lettuce, onions, leeks, chard, kale and bok choi. Our peas are starting to reach for their trellises and the garlic is looking gorgeous! The season is upon us.

Featured Veggie: Spinach

spinachHave you tried our spinach yet? It is sooooo good! Our secret? Growing it through the winter! Our spinach spent the winter under plastic tunnels, to be protected from the rain and cold. And when you grow spinach in cold weather, something amazing happens: the plants store sugar in their leaves to prevent them from freezing. Which means, that this spinach is extra sweet! You can find it at our Good Food Market.
