Since launching the first of its kind in Canada schoolyard farm, Fresh Roots continues to be an innovative, entrepreneurial, learning organization. We are on a mission to find new ways to engage with youth, grow more food and make learning on schoolyard farms more accessible and diverse. The best part about this is we share what we learn, being a catalyst and inspiration for others.

We are com’minting to raise $40,000 to get kids and youth learning and growing on schoolyard farms, and we need your help!

?15 people donating $25 will create accessible educational signage by translating signs into additional languages!

?20 people donating $50 will supply custom-made, compost tea to build soil health using a regenerative approach.

Exciting New Projects for 2024

We are currently in the middle of two exciting projects aiming to increase learning opportunities on our schoolyard farms while improving accessibility and food production:

1. Through our “Animating Schoolyard Farms for Connection, Learning, and Fun” project we’ve been actively engaging with our community in sessions to prototype new interactive signage for the farms. Check out the photos below for a sneak peak of this year’s SVNH Harvest Fest, where members of the community engaged in helping us shape the signs at David Thompson!
2. We have partnered with AgriTech companies with our “Exploring Agritech on Schoolyard Farms” project to test new approaches to improving food growing productivity while bringing in new technology components to our existing programs to diversity learning opportunities for youth. Community members at South Van Neighbourhood House were given the opportunity to tour the farm and learn about the space

Prototype signs were place around the schoolyard farms for community members to find as a scavenger hunt

Community members had the change to write and draw how they felt on the schoolyard farm, important input that we’ll use towards making signage that speaks to the community we serve
