by ops | Jul 28, 2021 | Experiential Learning, Stories from the Field

By Kat Vriesema-Magnuson, Experiential Learning Manager As I write this, EL Lead Andrea (aka Snap) is leading a wormshop for our EcoWonders campers. What’s a wormshop, you ask? Well, It’s a workshop… about worms! Red Wriggler worms, in this case, which are about...

10 Things I Learned from Students at Field Trips

by Fresh Roots | Jul 3, 2021 | Experiential Learning, Stories from the Field

By Andrea Lucy, Experiential Learning Program Lead   I’ve been a big kid at Fresh Roots’ field trips this year. While my role with Fresh Roots is teaching students visiting our farms for field trips, the students have wowed and amazed me with what they...

Farmer’s Log, Seed Date July 1, 2021

by ops | Jul 2, 2021 | Farmer's Log, Stories from the Field

July 1st. Wait, what? It’s J U L Y ? It’s July and the kale has exploded along with the weeds. I’m so thankful for our hard-working team (not just the farm workers!) and the handful of volunteers who have joined us in liberating our crops from the overwhelm of hungry,...

Hello from Norquay: Sharing is Caring

by ops | Jun 9, 2021 | Norquay Field House, Stories from the Field

The concept of a food sharing garden was first introduced to me a few years ago, back when I was a Fresh Roots intern. I recall eating lunch in the fields with my team and talking about forests in Japan where anybody could come to pick the fruit and produce that grew...

Farmer’s Log, Seed-date June 1, 2021

by ops | Jun 2, 2021 | Farmer's Log, Stories from the Field

Nuts and Bolting The nuts of farming, to me, translate to the “awe, nuts!” moments – like when you arrive one morning to your lovingly hand-reared broccoli transplants and find that they have all bolted prematurely. Riding the waves this spring – whether...

“Did you eat yet?” A Lunar New Year Reflection

by ops | Feb 12, 2021 | Stories from the Field

By Vivian Cheung, Fresh Roots Operations Coordinator As a Canadian-born Chinese, I grew up learning to communicate through culturally diverse lenses. Not only did I get immersed in weekly Saturday morning Mandarin classes, but I also was exposed to the important...

We have the privilege and honour to work on this land that is not ours. This is the ancestral and unceded homelands of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), stó:lō (Sto:lo), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), qiqéyt (Qayqayt), and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Coast Salish peoples. As settlers, as farmers, and as educators, we acknowledge the harm that farming and schooling has done to Indigenous Peoples and the land across this region. We work towards ongoing reconciliation as listeners, food sharers, and land stewards.

Thank You for Growing with Fresh Roots

Fresh Roots has cultivated learning and leadership countless children and youth to learn about land and food systems, build leadership skills, and grow confidence. We have strengthened connections between schools and food systems, provided tens of thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to our community, and played a central role as a community builder. We are deeply proud of what we’ve built together and the impact it has had.

Like many community-based non-profits, Fresh Roots has faced ongoing sustainability challenges. After careful consideration of what our resources can realistically support, the Board of Directors has made the painful decision to wind down Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society.

In light of this decision, all growing and programming is paused indefinitely.

We hope the seeds of change we have planted together will continue to nourish our community, even as they take root in new ways.
